Is it really August and is it really time to compose the Fall Newsletter?

Our prairie gardens… and their gardeners… are breathing a sigh of relief with cooler temperatures. We are grateful for beneficial moisture and are delighted to discover Praying Mantis and Green Lacewings devouring the bad bugs that are hungry for our beautiful blooms. This growing season has held its challenges… but our hearts and prayers are with so many of our summer visitors who have been displaced from their homes due to flooding and storms. Your attitude and perseverance are an inspiration! What’s a bad bug or two?

Beautiful locally grown pumpkins, gourds and Indian corn! Huge and gorgeous Belgian mum plants grown right here in our nursery area…perfect for a burst of fall color! New succulent gardens for a sunny window in your home…yes…something green and growing when the snow flies…and they will thrive on neglect! Original photographs featuring amazing images captured in our gardens…many featuring words of inspiration…and we’ve expanded our popular selection of note cards! Original art, garden wire, our own signature potpourris and lots more garden inspired treasures!!!! Take some time to tour our gardens. You will be amazed at the amazing variety of plants that survive on the Nebraska prairie…even during a very unusual growing season!

The Crisis Center serves a five county area in Dodge, Washington, Burt, Saunders and Cuming Counties in Nebraska. Please join us for lunch and refreshments in our Bistro area, pergola or choose your own peaceful place in our gardens…and enjoy!!! We are grateful for your support of our very own fundraising effort to benefit the Crisis Center during our Spring Open House…just wait until you see our autumn plans for this project!! For those who would like to further assist this worthwhile organization we happily accept your donations during our event. Their needs are personal care and grocery items, paper products, flashlights, batteries, cleaning products and used cell phones.

The Freeze Dry Chambers are set to temps below zero...what a thought on a day like today!!

The flowers are quickly inserted and placed under a vacuum. Every 12 hours we will increase the temperature by 5 degrees. The flowers will slowly thaw and the vacuum will remove the moisture! In 10 to 14 days I'll have more beautiful blooms to design with!!

You just have to love this time of year! Our mailbox is filled with seed catalogs and gardening magazines...and thankfully Mother Nature is teasing us with an occasional warm and sunny day! It's time to start gardening!!

Here's a simple recipe for a successful container garden....

choose a container with proper drainage...

use high quality potting soil....

provide proper nutrients...

and choose plants that will live happily together!

We're busy designing container gardens in the greenhouse...and this one is going to be beautiful!! A gorgeous topiary container planted in orange Kalanchoe...

and sweet little Candy Corn vine that will grow to grace....

the stunning Finial of this drought resistant container garden! Plants that love to live together... and blooms that are guaranteed to provide color throughout the entire growing season...what a great combination!!!!

The baby Pansies have been transplanted into their 'big kid' pots. They're so cute!!

Here's a preview of some new treasures from the shop! I love designing with the flowers that we have harvested and dried from our own gardens! It might be February...but thanks to our freeze dry technology I am enjoying beautiful blooms from our summer gardens!

I might just have to put my order in for one of these tables...a new creation from that husband of mine! With granite and glass mosaic tiles...oh, you really are after my heart!!! I think we might have another addition to that 'honey-do' list!!

I am remembering how beautiful this garden was last fall...

and I know it's there somewhere...

There are flakes flying in the air again...but we are grateful that they have not thrown a party, invited all of their friends and created mountains of snow in our yard....and we will forever be grateful for the help of our friends and neighbors...and for big green tractors!!!!

Here's The Plan...

From the first hard freeze until the earliest bloom of spring flowering bulbs we tolerate the beauty of the winter landscape. Now that the magic of the holiday season is packed away... it's time to dig through those late summer garden notes and plan for the season ahead!!

Yes...it's time to develop a plan!!

After months of looking out our windows to see nothing but white, brown and green... we are going to be hungry for COLOR!!!!! Our landscape plan starts with the potting shed. This special garden is shaded until late afternoon. Annuals that require a sunny exposure have not been happily planted in this location. Time for a change. Another important choice? Color!!! The faded red boards on this little building beg for complementary colors. Vibrant oranges, fuschia pinks and a neon shade of violet will bring this garden to life! OK..now it's finally time to choose the proper plants. This garden is already planted in perennials that bloom in their time... but a boost of annual color is going to bring this garden to life!! We know the answer!!

Sun tolerant varieties of Impatiens! Sunbelt Bright Pink, Candy Orange and Candy Violet. These little beauties promise to provide quite a show for our summer visitors!!!!

Well, the gardens...and this gardener... are finally prepared for a little winter's rest! Beneficial compost has been added to many of the beds and the newest batch of compost is 'cooking'. The 'green stuff' from all those containers and gardens has been fed through the chipper and mixed with the appropriate amount of 'brown stuff' in the form of fallen leaves. A little extra work? Yes! But....

with results like this...so worth that extra step!

This little guy isn't the only busy bee at our house these days!!! We are preparing to celebrate nature's treasures at our Autumn Boutique September 10, 11 and 12! Visit us on Friday and Saturday from 9 to 5 and Sunday from 11 to 4! This particular little bee? Well....we like to think he travels to our gardens from his home on the prairie at our neighbor's house... the O'Conner-Ruppert farm...his honey is available at our shop!

We have been busy harvesting, designing and decorating! The inspriration you need to celebrate the treasures of the season is...' Behind our Garden Gate!! Even our sweet little garden angel is ready for your visit!!

Take a tour of our outdoor rooms in bloom....then relax in our bistro area with a delicious lunch and refreshments to benefit the Crisis Center....

A Gardening Journal, a Recovery Journal....oh...so many opportunities to collect our thoughts and as they say...'write it down'!!!!!!

We are grateful for no injuries or structual damage! We will miss our fruit trees that were uprooted in the storm...but of course we will replant them! Our prairie gardens are tough and weathered this little micro burst. Our power was restored quickly...but it was a very short night in our house! Thank you to everyone who offered their help today! We are counting many, many blessings!!

Each year we research unique plants to grow in our prairie garden. Our research often includes a little geography lesson...comparing climates around the world to our Nebraska growing season! A little Aussie wildflower that doesn't seem to mind our heat and humidity! Clianthus Formosus or Sturt Pea- this little treasure has become an annual member of our garden family!
Another successful experiment! Gossypium...commonly known as Cotton! These beautiful blooms are followed by pods that contain the cotton. Our first pod has not yet opened but we are looking forward to sharing the first pictures with you! Hmm...you just never know what you might find blooming in our prairie garden!

The Great Peony Harvest....

Beautiful Peony blooms celebrate the beginning of this year's harvest. Each bloom is cut during early morning hours while the flower is at it's peak of beauty. The flowers are pre-treated and frozen in boxes on a bed of soft Easter grass. Our Freeze Dry Chambers are set to 30 degrees...below zero. The boxes are quickly inserted into the machine and placed under a vacuum. Every twelve hours the temperature in the chambers is raised by five degrees. As the flower very slowly thaws.....the vacuum pulls the moisture from the blooms into a central unit that must be defrosted daily. After ten to fourteen days these beautiful blooms are ready to be post-treated and designed into the stunning wreaths, arrangements and swags that we sell in our shop. Another beautiful treasure from our garden!

Getting ready for spring!! Checking soaker hoses and spreading Preen in the rest of the gardens. One of our favorite garden tips...put Preen on the melting snow-there was enough of that this year!! We worked on the potting shed and garden today. Looking forward to making memories with all of you this year!

Begonias....

One of the new Begonias in the greenhouse...with a very funny name!!! Begonia Withlacoochee!!! Now how can you pass on that one!!! Begonias are one of those amazing plants that add color to our shaded porches and even the pergola. They are one of the few plants that I walk by without watering very much!!! They make great houseplants during our long Nebraska winters, too!!!!

After A Very Long Winter...

It makes me so happy to hear that so many people are starting their own seeds and plants! We are all ready for spring!! If you are looking for another project to jump start the spring season...get out those summer flowering bulbs! Plant them in a pot and place them in a warm and sunny location in your home. Water them only once until they begin to show top growth or risk rotting the bulbs. Be sure to not place the bulbs too deeply in the soil! Most summer flowering bulbs are extremely sensitive to frost so watch the temperatures before your plant your new bulbs in the garden and...enjoy your early start to the growing season!!

Our Little Workers..

We continue to work with the use of beneficial insects in the greenhouse for pest management. Our sweet little UPS man must shake his head as he delivers a box marked "Live Ladybugs" to our door. We have also been researching the use of Lacewings in the greenhouse and will be releasing eggs today. It's a learning curve! But...it's working!!!! Organic growing!!!!

Here's My Plan...

It always helps to have a little bit of a plan! The Gazebo is always beautiful when the Clematis blooms...but an annual vine would be a great companion! My choice this year is a new discovery- Basella alba 'rubra". This vine is yes...edible!! Another experiment!! The pinkish blooms and purple berries will be complimented by Bubblegum Petunia baskets in the windows. Hmm, maybe some yellow in the garden bed...all framed by a beautiful field of seed corn! I'm ready!!

Last year's gorgeous Tomato harvest...

Oh, I'm ready!! A nasty little virus knocked me off my feet for a week or so...but I'm back and have so much to share with you! The greenhouse is bursting with so many great things! Let's start with the vegetable garden! Remember that Salsa recipe I posted last year? Imagine it with these great tomatoes we are growing this year!

Huge 32 ounce Dixie Golden Giant, beautiful White Queen, new six inch scalloped Marmande, two to five pound Giant Belgian, Garden Peach and fun little Green Sausage Tomato! Is your mouth watering yet????
